Release Conditions For Pavel Durov
To be released, Pavel Durov had to pay 5 million euros (about $5.5 million) and is not allowed to leave France. Durov was first detained on August 24 at an airport near Paris. Authorities kept him in custody until August 28, when they had to either release him or officially charge him. The investigation that led to these charges started in July and was directed at an “unnamed person.” Durov is accused of being involved in illegal activities, refusing to cooperate with authorities, money laundering, criminal association, and providing encryption services without proper approval. Prosecutors also say that Durov allowed child pornography and other illegal activities to spread on Telegram. He is facing separate child abuse allegations in Switzerland, but these are not related to the French case.
Durov’s arrest has sparked a debate about freedom of speech. Many of his supporters criticize the French authorities, arguing that holding him responsible for what Telegram users do could set a dangerous example. This could mean that other social media leaders, like Mark Zuckerberg of Meta or Elon Musk of X (formerly Twitter), might also be blamed for illegal activities on their platforms. This situation has caused worries about how social media platforms are run and how much responsibility their leaders should have for what users do.
