Two US lawmakers, Representative French Hill (Republican) and Representative Chrissy Houlahan (Democrat), have visited Tigran Gambaryan, a Binance executive currently detained at the Kuje correctional center in Abuja, Nigeria.
The visit was intended to show concern in the growing international concern over Gambaryan’s detention conditions and the Nigerian government’s stance on cryptocurrency operations.
Tigran Gambaryan, the Vice President of Global Intelligence and Investigations at Binance, has a distinguished background as a former special agent of the Internal Revenue Service—Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI) Cyber Crimes Unit in Washington, D.C.
During his tenure at the IRS-CI, Gambaryan was involved in investigating cases related to national security, terrorism financing, identity theft, and cybercrimes.
The Nigerian Government’s Action on Binance
Before Gambaryan’s detention, the Nigerian government had taken several steps against Binance. This included a demand for at least $10 billion as retribution from Binance amid allegations of the crypto exchange platform contributing to the devaluation of the nation’s local currency.
The government’s actions escalated with the detention of Gambaryan and another Binance executive, accusing them of operating without the requisite registrations and documentation.

The visit by the US lawmakers comes after reports of Gambaryan suffering from malaria and double pneumonia while being detained since February.
The lawmakers have called for his humanitarian release, citing the “horrible conditions” of the prison and his deteriorating health. Representative Hill has been vocal in advocating for Gambaryan’s release, emphasizing that the executive is being wrongfully detained.
The Nigerian government, however, has denied allegations of poor health conditions for Gambaryan, affirming his access to quality medical care.
Despite these assurances, the international community, including over 100 former prosecutors, has urged the US government to forcefully intervene for Gambaryan’s release.
Meanwhile the case continues in court, today.
